SCHOLARSHIPS
East West Center, Hawaii: The Asian Development Bank (Bank) has released its Fall 2009 scholarships. There are about 200 scholarships for the Pacific Islands (as far as I remember) and Asian countries. The Application forms are available online. You must apply before February 1.

The scholarship is awarded to qualified individuals to study at the University of Hawaii, Oahu, HI, US. You need to submit two applications; one for the University of Hawaii and one for the East West Center who will fund this scholarship. When accepted, you will require to relocate to Hawaii and remain in Hawaii for the duration of your degree (four years). You will also have the opportunity to attend other Universities in mainland US for a semester or two and visit Washington DC and New York with their exchange program. You must return to your country after your studies. Read carefully before you submit your application. More information can be found on the link above.

Email administration office if you need more information, or check out the EWC and write to them if you want more information about that center. There is a Solomon Islander in the selection board, Dr. Tara Kabutaulaka from Guadalcanal so there's a chance for Solomon Islanders.

The International Work Experience Scholarship (IWES): This scholarship is awarded to LDS and Non LDS students from Africa, Asia, and especially the Pacific Islands. The scholarship is offered by the Polynesian Cultural Center. It is called the International Work Experience scholarship (IWES). Like the EWC scholarship, the IWES requires you to attend Brigham Young university Hawaii just adjacent to the center, while working at the Polynesian Cultural Center; jobs ranging from dish-washing to entertainment (dancing). There are exciting jobs at the PCC-the highly visited center in all Hawaii. You will have to return to your country after graduation. Please read carefully their "returnability" policy.

Check out the BYUH website and email the admission office for more information. Caution: the scholarship doesn't meet travel expenses. You will have to pay your own way and they will take care of you when you get to Hawaii. You might want to visit the Polynesian Cultural Center and find out for yourself the kind things they do.
Polynesian Cultural Center
The Hawaii Pacific University has two campuses on Oahu. One in downtown in the heart of Chinatown, and the other lies between UH and BYUH. HPU offers undergraduate and graduate scholarships, but are partially paid. Which means that applicants will have the obligation to pay 50% of the scholarship. However, there are other scholarships offered to both US and international students. They are are listed on their website.

The Fulbright Scholarship is one of the most popular scholarships for international students. The Fulbright program offers scholarships, teaching opportunities and research programs in institutions in US. Solomon Islands is fortunately amongst Pacific islands nation that eligible for the program. This is a good program for those of you out there that are qualified. The Australia National University. The ANU is offering impressive scholarships (100% tuition) to qualified intentional students for 2009; a number of Solomon Islanders were awarded this scholarship so give it a try. Check out the 2009 awards and don't hesitate to apply.
